Support Approval of Anahuacalmecac,
International University Preparatory
High School of North America Charter
Dear Supporters,
Please read the following message from my friend, supporter, and TIME Committee member, Mario Rocha. I fully support this effort and am writing a personal letter expressing this to the Los Angeles Unified School District board.
I invite you to support Mario's efforts to obtain approval of the Anahuacalmecac, International University Preparatory High School of North America charter. You are also invited to join the Facebook group and sign the online petition in support of this effort as well. Links to all these things appear at the bottom of the page.

Greetings Neighbors and Friends,
I write to implore you on behalf of the children of Los Angeles to take part in our community’s grassroots campaign to move the Los Angeles Unified School District (“L.A.U.S.D.”) into approving our charter for Anahuacalmecac, International University Preparatory High School of North America, which is currently being reviewed by the L.A.U.S.D. and Superintendent David L. Brewer.
As many of you may already know, Anahuacalmecac is the upper division complement to the current International Baccalaureate (IB) Early and Middle Years programs at Academia Semillas del Pueblo (“Academia”) in El Sereno. This high school phase rounds out the vision of a richly multi-cultural, multi-lingual and humanistic educational continuum that we feel children everywhere deserve.
In 2002, founders of Academia had a vision of offering students a high quality international education rooted in cultural practices. The vision developed in response to the cultural void in public schools that insisted on teaching Indigenous Peoples that "History" commenced when Christopher Columbus set foot on this continent and, therefore, our history did not matter. They also wanted to combat the exorbitant dropout rate and failure of the current education system to adequately prepare students for the university.
Under the plan envisioned by Academia, students would leave high school with a diploma in their hands and a uniquely global understanding that would afford them academic confidence in any higher education setting – in the continent or abroad. It would also provide students the wherewithal to maintain their positive sense of identity while respecting other cultures.
You may have heard something of the challenges we have faced in our perilous past and thanks to the hard work of the teachers and students we are now well underway in bringing this new vision to fruition. Our history tells us that teachers and students alone will not win us another victory and so we now appeal for your help in getting the L.A.U.S.D. to approve our current charter.
A hearing will soon take place at the L.A.U.S.D. headquarters where, one year ago, March 29, 2007, our community ended a march that began at La Placita Olvera in support of the renewal of our charter. (See my video, “espiral ancestral: las semillas de liberacion,” for a glimpse at the danza that took place that day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOLx0sMyyw4)
This historic and collective effort indeed helped gain us our charter by convincing the L.A.U.S.D. of the power of our unity and persistence. We must be prepared to take similar actions for the opening of Anahuacalmecac, however, at this time we are asking you to send letters of your support to the L.A.U.S.D. and to prepare for possible actions, if necessary, and for the real challenges of actually running this high school.
I am attaching here three (3) heartfelt letters of support, each written by members of our community who agreed to help us initiate this letter-writing campaign with their own voices. I thank each of them for stepping up as friends and allies in our movement for better education.
One is from a community organizer, Esperanza Martinez, whose niece attends Academia and whose experience in the L.A.U.S.D. taught her to appreciate the alternatives to public education that, like Academia, are born of and for the community.
Another letter is from a freelance writer, Abel Salas, who lives in El Sereno and who takes great pride in knowing that Academia exists in his community and in the world.
Finally, one letter is from a USC student, Art Argomaniz, who describes how he was never encouraged to go to college though he maintained a 3.0 GPA throughout his high school years and who writes, “With the emergence of schools such as Anahuacalmecac, students who have historically been deprived of an equal education will have an opportunity to turn that around.”
I ask you to read these letters, to absorb their message and to use them as inspiration for your own missives to the L.A.U.S.D. We encourage you to speak from your hearts and to think critically about why a high school such as Anahuacalmecac is needed. Before sending your letters to the L.A.U.S.D., address listed below, please cc: Academia Semillas del Pueblo at the end of your letters (below your signature) and forward us a hard copy to my attention. We hope to archive these letters as written testimonials of those who stand with us in the ongoing struggle for dignity in education.
Because our L.A.U.S.D. Board hearing is fast approaching, please send your letters as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your time, support and consideration.
In hopes of seeing social change through our unity and actions,
Respectfully Yours,
